CALLING ALL SUBMISSIONS FOR THE TOP TEN BY YEAR: 1978 POLL

days-of-heaven-3I’m in the final fourth of my research for Top Ten By Year: 1978 (I’ve got about 13 viewings left). With 1992 and 1958 I conducted a poll with all you fellow film lovers, asking what your choices would be. It has been such a success so far, and it’s become the inaugural kick-off for festivities in the Top Ten By Year Project. Next month, be on the lookout for a series of posts that cover 1978; an amazing disco-heavy Movie Music Mix, Favorite Posters of 1978, a What I’ll Remember post, Ten Honorable Mentions, the Top Ten, and to start it all off; the Poll Results.

Order doesn’t factor in for results, but you are more than welcome submit them that way. If you are struggling to come up with ten passionate picks, a single digit submission is equally acceptable. I don’t want 10 for the sake of 10.

Leave your lists in the comments section. Voting is open for the next seven days.

Top Ten By Year: 1958 – Poll Results

After successfully incorporating a poll into my Top Ten By Year Project for the 1992 festivities, it was clear this needed to become a tradition. So months later, after viewings and re-watches galore, here we are, arriving at the end of my 1958 research. And to kick things off, I asked all of you to tell me your top films of 1958. Up to 10 were allowed, order not required.

I received 98 responses total from twitter, tumblr and WordPress combined, and 93 different films represented!!! For some perspective, there were 60 responses to the 1992 poll. So thank you so much to everyone who voted for making this a considerably bigger turnout than last!

Keep a tab on Cinema Enthusiast, because over the next couple of weeks I’ll be posting the rest of my 1958 series including a Music Mix, What I’ll Remember About the Films of 1958: A Personal Sampling, and of course my own Top Ten. For the 1992 results, my list was tallied in with the rest, but not this time because as of right now I still have a few things to watch and re-watch.

Below I have both the aggregate results and all of your individual responses. As much fun as seeing the collective top ten, it’s far more important for me to post everybody’s response because a. the individual lists are always far more fun that the collective and b. ideally this post should function as a resource for learning about films you may not have heard of, but that person whose taste you really trust on twitter listed it as one of their favorites so maybe you should check it out!

Mandatory reminder (I do this every time) that I use lists as a representation of taste, an excuse to extrapolate, as prompts for discussion and discovery, and, when it comes to my Top Ten By Year project, as a finale to where the real importance lies; the viewings themselves.

Top Ten By Year: 1992 Poll Results

Films not eligible for this list: Wild Strawberries, The Cranes Are Flying, and Night of the Demon (I have them all as 57).

Calling All Submissions for the Top Ten By Year: 1958 Poll!

BELL BOOK AND CANDLE4
I’m in the final stretch of my research for Top Ten By Year: 1958 (I’ve got about 8 viewings left). With my previous year, 1992, I conducted a poll with all you fellow film lovers, asking what your choices would be. It was such a success that I’ll be making it an inaugural kick-off of each year in the Top Ten By Year Project. So next month, be on the lookout for a series of posts that cover 1958; a Movie Music Mix, Personal Remembrance, the Top Ten, and to start it all off; the Poll Results.

Order doesn’t factor in for results, but you are more than welcome submit them that way. If you are struggling to come up with ten passionate picks, a single digit submission is equally acceptable. I don’t want 10 for the sake of 10.

2012 in Film: Year-So-Far Poll #1 – Most Disappointing

Hello all! I truly apologize that it has been a bit of a dead zone here lately. I go through spurts of being motivated to write a lot and vice versa. This is one of those vice versa times.  But I’m going to try and get some modicum of consistency going again. The fall prestige season is here and I’d like to write reviews for several films from the upcoming slate as well as several from films from this year I’m catching up on. My number of 2012 films seen is at 56 and I’d like it to be much higher by the time the year is finished so, among other reasons, I feel qualified to give decently well-rounded year-end lists. But for now, let’s kick things off with the first in a series of poll installment posts for all you movie lovers out there. It does not matter how many 2012 films you have seen; everyone can answer. Hopefully this will get you reflecting a bit about the year so far:

What I like about asking which film(s) were you most disappointed by this year is that it reflects greatly on what the individual moviegoer was looking forward to. There are plenty of films to be underwhelmed by, but the ones that truly disappoint are films that we had been highly anticipating for one reason or another. It is always clear what the consensus was underwhelmed or even vehement about and those films will certainly pop up here as well. However, it is the wide array of choices I am looking forward to seeing; a selection that goes past only representation of Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises.

When I asked those who follow me on twitter today to tell me what they were most disappointed by this year, I hardly got any repeats. The selection ranged from The Master to Cosmopolis to Lockout to Lawless to Keyhole and even Samsara.

I favored wider releases for the poll choices, but please don’t take that as an accurate representation of film this year. There was a ton I left out.

MY ANSWER: I’d have to go with Whit Stillman’s long-awaited return with Damsels in Distress. This had been one of the films I was most anxious to see (#4 on my Films to See in January-April). Sorry Mr. Stillman, but I found your latest effort to be whimsically empty, the worst kind of froth and with characters who are too self-satisfied to even remotely register as anything but.

I’d love to hear your reasons in the comments section!

PLEASE BE SURE TO PUT YOUR ANSWER IN OTHER IF YOUR CHOICE DOES NOT APPEAR. ALSO, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO VOTE FOR UP TO 3 FILMS.

Poll: Approaching the 1960’s

It only took until July, but I am finally closing up the 1950’s (I have four films left to watch), and am preparing to enter the 1960’s. I am taking a slightly different approach this time. This decade experiment is mostly an effort to focus on ‘canon’ films I have yet to see with a few semi-obscurities thrown in. Problem is, the number quickly piles up as there is so much to see! I have a hard time cutting down my to-see lists , especially when everyone so kindly offers up their recommendations. If I ever want to smoothly make my way across the decades, I need to cut my losses a bit more. After this year, it’ll be a free-for-all and I’ll hopefully make my way towards some hidden gems. My launching number for the 1960’s is 31. I will list them and I ask for recommendations from those 30 (as opposed to the over 60 listed for the 1950’s). I’m going to try and get through as many as I can.

First! A list of the films I watched for the 1950’s:

The Big Heat (1953, Lang)
Ivan the Terrible Part II (1946/1955, Eisenstein)
Journey to Italy (1954, Rossellini)
Los Olvidados (1950, Bunuel)
Animal Farm (1954)
Ordet (1955, Dreyer)
Senso (1954, Visconti)
The Furies (1950, Mann)
Nights of Cabiria (1957, Fellini)
A Man Escaped (1956, Bresson)
Floating Weeds (1959, Ozu)
Les Enfants Terribles (1950, Melville)
The River (1951, Renoir)
Casque D’Or (1952, Becker)
Le Plaisir (1952, Ophuls)
Night of the Demon (1957, Tourneur)
The Band Wagon (1953, Minnelli)
Les Cousins (1959, Chabrol)
House on Haunted Hill (1959, Castle)
Bad Day at Black Rock (1955, Sturges)
Sudden Fear (1952, Miller)
The Wrong Man (1956, Hitchcock)
Mon Oncle (1958, Tati)
Caged (1950, Marshall)
Street of Shame (1956, Mizoguchi)
Party Girl (1958, Ray)
Pather Panchali (not yet watched)
Smiles of a Summer Night (not yet watched)
Crazed Fruit (not yet watched)
On the Beach (not yet watched)

Here are my choices for the 1960’s. All recommendations based on these choices (or others you may deem noteworthy) are much appreciated.

Poll: 1950’s Film Recommendations

In about 5 days I’ll be leaving the 1940’s and entering the 1950’s. This clearly means I’ll be looking for some film recommendations! I already have a list that I’ve made to work off of. Problem is, as always, it is far too long to feasibly work my way through. So I’ll need help narrowing down which films I should make a point not to miss. I will admit there are a handful of these I have as absolutes already. But I still want an idea of what I simply ‘must’ see out of these.

I am also taking recommendations not on this list, which can be done in the comments section or in the space for ‘Other’. If it is not on this list, there is a chance I have seen it. Even so, please comment with other picks! For a reference point, I’ve seen around 150 films from the 1950’s altogether.

Be sure to comment and/or participate in the poll! There’s so much to see but I can only stay with this decade for roughly a month!

Poll: Most Anticipated October 2011 Release?

October has arrived. There is a lot coming out this month, so take a second and vote on the film you are anticipating the most this October!! Results will be revealed on the 10th!
